To choose the right tackle you first of all need to decide what sort of water and type of fish you are interested in. Read the sections below to find out more. For the beginner we would recommend starting out on either trout and grayling rivers, small stillwaters or loughs and reservoirs. The other kinds of fishing require more specialised tackle and tactics and are not as readily accessible. On the other hand if you live beside the sea or near a salmon river then by all means give it a try. You will find some advice in the relevant section.
If you are not sure what you prefer find out what sort of fishing is available near where you live and what it costs. Or come on one of our fishing trips. You can hire some tackle at very reasonable rates and we will teach you the basics. Then, when you are ready to buy your first kit you will be able to make a much more informed choice on what suits you.
Read about Choosing your tackle for more information on the options available on each piece of tackle.
