Six members of WEFF visited Pitsford on a hot July day. Fishing was described as "difficult" by the warden who advised fishing by the aerator along the dam as a result of which everyone headed there. Over by the causeway, Bob was rewarded with a three and a half pound rainbow on a stonefly pattern - his best fish yet! Hugh O'Reilly meanwhile slipped away and retired to the local pub just down the road then spent the afternoon fast asleep in the cool shade of a large tree by the reservoir. Finally, beaten finally by the heat and poor fishing we returned to the pontoon to be greeted by a refreshed and cool O'Reilly. We sojourned back to the pub for some liquid refreshment before returning home .
A hard day but as ever, whatever the fishing, a pleasant day out. Read the full report...
Two of our members had a great day out at Hanningfield Reservoir in Essex. We are extremely happy to see Robert getting among the fish as he is a beginner and new member of our club. Duane, his boat partner is an old member who has fished everywhere with us. I take this opportunity to point out that Robert is a Scots and Duane is Welsh therefore proving that we accept all foreigners in this club. Congrats and best wishes to you both.
The club entered and won the local community quiz with proceeds going to promote men's health awareness what with their reluctance to attend their doctors for check ups etc. The WEFF team, as one would come to expect, duly took first prize.
Our June 5th - 9th brown trout fishing trip to the River Suir in Co. Tipperary, Ireland, was an outstanding success. We returned very late on Monday 9th an extremely tired but very happy group of eleven anglers. Some just had their first river fishing experience, some having caught their first brown on a dry fly and others just extremely puzzled about the licensing laws of the country . We were not gifted with water levels as the main river was high and coloured, which was overcome by having to take part of our group to the Aherlow river and also on to a small stream called the Ara where stalking and pinpoint accuracy of your dry fly being the order of the day. We did have some good sport on the main river as the water fell the next day and continued to fall. Our best fish were over the 1 lb mark of which we had several. Comments from some of our group: "best days fishing of my life", "fantastic", " great fishing great company". Most are rebooking for next year. Read the full report...
Ravensthorpe was built in Victorian times and is England’s oldest stillwater fishery. It is 100 acres set in pretty rolling countryside and fairly sheltered. About 20 members of the WEFF (West End Fly Fishers) were fishing bank, boat and even float tube. We were joined by a couple of first time fly fishers being coached by Hughie. At day's end several had caught fish. Someone had a another full-tailed fighter over 2.25kg (5lbs), Mark had taken a hefty 4.05kg (9lb) rainbow from one of the float tubes and some other good sized fish were taken.
Ravensthorpe is a pretty place to fish and has abundant fly life from what I could see. The weather was not good on the day, but I think it would be a great dry fly water in quieter conditions. Read the full report...
